Tarapoto offers the tourist and businessman a variety of comfortable hotels and hostels as well as recreation and activity centres in Tarapoto and the surrounding area, including the well-equipped Puerto Palmeras resort and adventure holiday center just outside the city. 

There are attractive areas of countryside close at hand where you can see the flora and fauna of the area and waterfalls. There are opportunities for adventure expeditions including white water rafting and canoeing trips.

Local crafts and souvenirs are on sale often making use of attractive jungle resources such as exotic seeds, feathers, coconut shells and straw as well as gifts made with Peruvian silver, gold and other precious stones.

There is also of course a wide variety of local food and dishes, locally-produced alcoholic drinks such as uvachado (made with grapes and aguardiente) the medicinal siete raices (made with medicinal tree roots and barks) and chuchuhuasi.

Local folklore is well represented and of special interest is the native community of Lamas and the ethnic museum there. This is approximately 30 minutes by car from Tarapoto.

Tarapoto is also a set off point for tours of the North East of Peru and Amazon, including the Chachapoyas culture in Amazonas with its fascinating but not so well known archaeology and history, the Gran Vilaya ruins, the Kuelap fortress (Machu Picchu of the North) and the Inca Trail of northern Peru.

Access is via a 60 minute plane flight from Lima with Star Peru, Lan Peru y Wayra Peru (once or twice a day), or by road (approximately 24 hours, depending on coach company and the conditions of the new asphalt road which now goes all the way from Lima to Tarapoto).

The best months for a first visit to Tarapoto are probably between June and October when there is little rain.

Tarapoto, "Ciudad de las Palmeras", es la ciudad más grande del departamento de San Martín cuya capital es Moyobamba.  Se encuentra a unos 350 m.s.n.m y tiene un clima tropical. 

Tarapoto ofrece una variedad de hoteles y hostales en la ciudad y alrededores para el turista y el negociante, incluyendo Puerto Palmeras Resort con su centro de esparcimiento y centro de turismo de aventura a pocos minutos de la ciudad de Tarapoto. 

Hay paisajes hermosos y cataratas cerca de la ciudad, donde puede deleitarse de la flora y fauna de la región. Se puede disfrutar de turismo de aventura, canotaje, white water rafting, expediciones y caminatas.

Posee una variedad de artesanía y recuerdos en venta, muchas veces utilizando recursos atractivos de la selva como semillas exóticas, plumas, coco y paja. Además hay adornos y artesanía de plata y oro peruana y otras piedras preciosas.

Tiene una gran variedad de comida típica, platos regionales, tragos exóticos y licores regionales, como el uvachado (a base de uvas y aguardiente), siete raíces (trago medicinal a base de raíces de árboles y agua ardiente) y chuchuhuasi.

El folklore es bien representado e incluye la comunidad nativa de Lamas y su museo étnico. Lamas se encuentra aproximadamente a 30 minutos de Tarapoto en auto.

Tarapoto es un punto de partida del circuito turístico nor-oriental hacia Amazonas y la región de la Amazonía. La cultura de Chachapoyas es de interés especial por su fascinante y poca visitada arqueología y ruinas, que incluye la fortaleza pre-Inca de Kuelap (Machu Picchu del norte), Gran Vilaya y el Camino del Inca del Perú del norte.

El acceso es por avión desde la capital de Lima (45 minutos) con Star Perú, Lan Perú y Wayra Perú (uno o dos veces por día) o por tierra (aproximadamente 24 horas en bus dependiendo de la compañía de transporte y las condiciones de la nueva carretera que ahora llega a Tarapoto desde Lima.)

Los mejores meses para una primera visita son probablemente los meses entre Junio y Octubre donde hay poca lluvia.
